The Pregnant Diaries - Week 10

WOOHOOOOOO!!!! Thursday morning we got to go see the doctor for the first time!! :D

I guess it's weird being excited to see the doc, but Paul and I weren't completely convinced I was pregnant until we heard the heartbeat.

For those of you who are planning on getting pregnant and wondering what happens at your first appointment -- here is what happened at mine.

1. Came into the care center 15 minutes early because I had to fill out paperwork. This was my first time coming to this care center as I hadn't been to a doc since right before we got married. So if you already have a regular caretaker, then you can skip this step haha.

2. Weighed me. I had gained 5 lbs already haha.

3. Ushered into a waiting room where the nurse took my blood pressure and afterwards asked me a lot of questions and asked Paul a few. Some of them had to do with health and others were questions such as, "When was your last period?" "When did you take the pregnancy test?" and things like that. She then told us how many weeks along I was and when the due date was. It was kind of funny because at first she said I was 6 weeks along.....and I was like huh? I thought I was 10 lol. And she did a double take and confirmed it was 10. She also told us our baby was due April 28th. :)

4. Doc came in. He was very nice and chatted with us a bit to get to know us better. It made me feel more comfortable. I asked him any questions I had on my mind (and written down on a piece of paper), which wasn't many. So get a list together of questions you may have. One of mine was even a simple question of "how many times should we schedule a checkup/visit?" and the answer was at least once a month.

5. Gave me "the gown". That thing is soooo awesome....not. lol For those of you who haven't had the pleasure of wearing it, it's basically a sheet with armholes and they ask that you leave the back untied for the awesome physical that you are about to get. They also give you a papery covering for your lower half.

6. After changing into that and lying down on the table thinger, the doc put some nice goopy stuff on my belly and searched around for the heartbeat, which is what I was waiting for!! He first showed me what my heartbeat sounded like and then kept moving the ultrasound device. I was getting kind of nervous cos I wasn't hearing anything. Then it happened! We all heard this tiny little heartbeat going crazy fast. Paul immediately says, "Whoa, so there IS something in there." And after that Paul has fully acknowledged that I'm pregnant haha. I almost cried when I heard it because it was SO AWESOME. Loved every moment of it.

7. And then the fun part of checking my heartbeat, checking for breast cancer, and then doing the papsmear. I'm guessing I may not have had to do that if I had a more recent checkup, but they will have the physical if it has at least been a year for you.

8. Afterwards they sent me away with a lot of little packets of prenatal supplements and said I could try them out and purchase a whole bottle if I wanted. Then it was off to get my blood drawn. And, to be honest, this was a first for me. I've never given blood so I was a bit nervous. The funny thing is that I'm pretty okay as long as I watch. So I watched the lady poke in the needle and draw the 5 vials of blood. It was pretty gross, but other than being a bit lightheaded I was okay. The lady thought it was weird that I watched the whole time. I guess I just had to make sure she wasn't going to take ALL of my blood? No idea why I had to watch.....I'm not very good with blood.

Tada! That was it! :D

How Big is Baby?
Baby is as big as a prune! Yuck, I don't really like prunes. Baby is about 1.2 inches.

What's Icarus Up To?

Icarus got a bag stuck around his neck. He loves to stick his head in the handles.

SO exciting you got to hear the heartbeat of your little baby! That is the most precious thing ever! I remember not really believing I was pregnant, either, until that appointment, especially because I didn't really get sick my first trimester. Congrats!

Haha so true Melissa. I explained it to Paul before going in, and he decided to not be in the room when I had the physical lol.
